COVID-19: Again, Kaduna govt announces closure of schools

The Kaduna State Government has announced the closure of all schools across the state due to the rising cases of Covid-19 infections.

This was contained in a press statement issued to newsmen on Monday by the state’s commissioner for education, Shehu Usman Muhammad.

The commissioner stated that the closure became necessary to help curtail further spread of COVID-19 as leaving the schools open will expose the students to danger of contracting the virus.

“The Kaduna State Ministry of Education wishes to inform the general public, parents, guardians and students of the new date of school closures due to the rising cases of Covid-19 infections in the state which shows a replicate of figure recorded in the first wave of the pandemic in April, May and June, 2020,” he said.

In the statement, Muhammad also explained that adults and children within the age bracket of 10-35 years are more prone to the virus in this second wave.

“The ministry of health has also confirmed that while the infections cut across age groups, this new wave especially affects those between the age bracket of 10 and 35years which form the majority of populace in the education sector,” the commissioner added.

He said all schools are to be closed on Wednesday, December 16 as opposed to the initial closing dates as examinations must be concluded on or before Tuesday, December 15, 2020.

The state government also ordered that all tertiary institutions of learning across the state must comply with the directive and make necessary arrangements for other platforms of learning.

Meanwhile basic learners and secondary schools are advised to always join the Kaduna State TV, Radio and e-learning programmes.

It further advised the general public to always adhere strictly to the regular washing of hands with soap under running water, use facemasks, maintain physical distancing, avoid crowded places and take the campaign to other residents in good time.

A new date of resumption will be announced, the ministry said.
