…two teachers killed, NECO candidates abducted

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have killed two teachers and abducted an unspecified number of students during national examinations in the Askira/Uba local government area of Borno State.

The attackers stormed Lassa Day Secondary School in Uba at about 9am, arriving in a convoy of utility vehicles and motorcycles. Witnesses stated that the insurgents, dressed in counterfeit military and forest guard uniforms, bypassed a nearby military checkpoint unopposed before shooting sporadically for nearly an hour.

Details of the assault

Samaila Kaigama, President of the Borno South Youth Alliance, confirmed that the attackers split into two distinct groups during the operation. The first group targeted local market stalls, abducting several female traders and critically wounding a businessman.

The second group invaded the school premises where candidates were sitting their National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations. One teacher originally from Chibok was killed during the raid, while another instructor sustained severe gunshot injuries.

Rising regional insecurity

The exact number of abducted students and resident traders remains unverified as regional security forces assess the situation. This assault occurs less than two months after insurgents abducted 42 students from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School within the same local government area.
