As farmers across Kano State intensify preparations for the 2026 wet season farming cycle, the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, has concluded arrangements for the distribution of 53,040 bags of fertiliser to farmers and other beneficiaries across the 13 local government areas of Kano North Senatorial District.
The intervention, which will see the distribution of the fertiliser conveyed in 88 truckloads, is aimed at reducing the burden of rising agricultural input costs and boosting food production ahead of the farming season.
According to a statement issued by Barau’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, the annual fertiliser distribution programme will commence on May 31 across the senatorial district.
The statement said the initiative forms part of the lawmaker’s sustained efforts to support farmers, improve agricultural productivity and contribute to the attainment of food security in the country.
The beneficiaries cut across different segments of society, including farmers, party stakeholders, elected local government chairmen and vice-chairmen, councillors, secretaries, members of the APC caucus, traditional and religious leaders, school administrators, security personnel and social media influencers.
The statement noted that the intervention comes at a time when many farmers are grappling with the high cost of fertiliser and other farm inputs, a situation that has raised concerns over agricultural output and food prices nationwide.
Senator Barau was quoted as reaffirming his commitment to programmes that directly improve the welfare of his constituents, stressing that timely access to fertiliser remains crucial to achieving higher crop yields and ensuring adequate food production.
He said the distribution was designed to complement ongoing efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to strengthen agricultural production and achieve national food security.
The Deputy Senate President urged all beneficiaries to make effective use of the fertiliser to maximise agricultural output and ensure that the intervention delivers its intended impact on food production and livelihoods.
Observers say the initiative is expected to provide relief to thousands of farmers in Kano North, one of the country’s major agricultural belts, where access to affordable fertiliser remains a key determinant of farm productivity and harvest outcomes.
With the onset of the rainy season drawing closer, the fertiliser support is expected to enhance cultivation activities and encourage increased participation in farming across the district.
