Bala protects Bauchi minors, signs child trafficking, abduction bills to law

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed on Tuesday signed an Executive Order 002 as well as a Legislative Bill on Child Trafficking and Abduction into law as part of measures to fight child abduction and trafficking in the State.

Governor Mohammed signed the Executive Order at the Executive Council Chamber at the State Government House in Bauchi, saying
the measure would strengthen Community safety and offer greater protection to vulnerable children in the State.

BusinessDay reports that the key Provisions of Executive Order 002, compel landlords to profile and verify tenants’ identities before leasing properties, order Community leaders to vet and identify all tenants within their jurisdictions, and compel Transport Unions to verify individuals traveling with children and report suspicious activity.

He said, “I am committed to safeguarding our children and communities. The law is a decisive step in the fight against child abduction and trafficking.

“This action follows the successful rescue of seven abducted children from a trafficking syndicate in Southeastern Nigeria—a victory made possible through the collaboration of the Nigerian Police, Airport Authorities, and State First Ladies – I commend their efforts in ensuring these children were brought home safely.

“Violations of this Order will attract penalties, and no one is above the law. I believe these steps will not only improve security but also make Bauchi State a safer and more welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and investors alike”.

He however urged parents to remain vigilant, calling on communities to take collective responsibilities in protecting children in Bauchi State, saying “cooperation from landlords, tenants, community leaders, and transport unions will be vital to the success of the measures.”
