Avon Healthcare Limited (Avon HMO), in collaboration with (AIESEC) at the University of Lagos, has partnered on a two-day health outreach programme aimed at promoting preventive healthcare and increasing voluntary blood donation among young Nigerians.
The initiative, tagged Uniwellness 3.0, combined blood donation with free health screenings and medical counselling aimed at encouraging early detection of common non-communicable diseases among young Nigerians.
Blood collected during the exercise will be donated to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where it is expected to support at least 255 patients requiring emergency care, surgeries, maternal health services and other life-saving medical interventions.
The programme also offered participants free screening for hypertension, diabetes and kidney disease, alongside health education sessions covering mental wellbeing and sexual health.
Adeoye Falade, head of Brand, Marketing and Communications at Avon HMO, said the initiative reflects the need to shift healthcare conversations towards prevention rather than treatment.
“Many of the health challenges confronting society today, including hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease and cardiovascular conditions, can be prevented or better managed through early detection and timely intervention,” Falade said.
“Through initiatives like Uniwellness, we are creating opportunities for young people to access credible health information, undergo screenings and make informed decisions about their wellbeing.”
Health experts have consistently identified voluntary blood donation as a critical component of healthcare systems, particularly in meeting demand for emergency medicine, surgical procedures and maternal care. They have also warned that many cases of hypertension, diabetes and kidney disease remain undiagnosed until complications develop, underscoring the importance of routine health checks.
The outreach brought together students, young professionals and healthcare practitioners to promote healthier lifestyles while encouraging greater participation in voluntary blood donation.
Avon HMO said the initiative forms part of its broader focus on preventive healthcare by expanding access to health education, routine screenings and other community-based health interventions.
