ASUU-FUAM condemns kidnap of female students, demands immediate release

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), of the Federal University of Agriculture (FUAM), Makurdi has condemned the kidnap of four female students of the institution and demands their immediate release.

Paul Anyagh, the ASUU chapter chairman at FUAM in a statement condemned the kidnapping, describing it as a criminal act against innocent students.

“With what has happened, we are no longer sure of the safety of our members on campus. This is not the first time such an incident has occurred.

“A member of our union was previously kidnapped at the university staff quarters. Although he was later released, it exposed the weak security on our campus,” Anyagh said.

The lecturers’ union attributed the unfortunate incident to the porous security system within and around the university community.

Besides, ASUU-FUAM cited past kidnap cases involving students, which the union reiterated had to do with inadequate security network of both staff and students.

Consequently, ASUU demands the immediate and safe rescue of the kidnapped students by the university administration and security agencies.

Moreover, the lecturers called for an improved security architecture on campus to create a safe environment for teaching and learning; and enhanced security measures to prevent further incidents and protect both students and staff.

“We stand in solidarity with our students and parents and hope for the safe release of the abducted students soonest,” the union stated.

Recall that on Tuesday, February 25, there was a report of four female students who were waylaid and kidnapped while heading to a lecture hall.

The attack, according to the report, was carried out by unknown armed men, and this has ignited horror, and fear among students, who are calling for swift action from authorities.

However, in the face of this worrying situation, ASUU-FUAM has asked its members to remain calm, expressing confidence that the university administration is making efforts to secure the campus and facilitate the safe return of the students.
