Rotimi Amaechi, the former Governor of Rivers State, has expressed deep concern regarding the health and safety of Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, who is currently held in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). Amaechi warned that the continued detention of the former governor due to poor health poses a severe risk.

In a recent interview with Trust TV, Amaechi disclosed that El-Rufai was already ill prior to his detention by the secret police. He cautioned that if El-Rufai dies whilst in custody, it could provoke a highly volatile situation that the federal government may struggle to contain.

Demands for medical release and legal access

Amaechi argued that El-Rufai should be permitted to return home immediately to receive proper medical treatment in a hospital. Furthermore, he noted that the government must allow the detainee unrestricted access to his lawyers and permit him to attend court proceedings from his residence.

Articulating his concerns, Amaechi stated: “The fear I have is that El-Rufai was ill; he went to the hospital. I hope he does not die in detention. That would spark off what the government cannot manage. The earlier they left him to go home and go to the hospital, the better for everybody.”
