…As party rounds off Assembly primaries

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Akwa Ibom State has concluded its statewide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections, with delegates unanimously adopting Eyakekpono Obo as the party’s governorship candidate.

The exercise, conducted at the party secretariat located at 84 Udotong Ubo Street, Uyo, covered primaries for the State House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate and Governorship positions.

Party faithful described the process as peaceful, transparent, noting that it reflected unity and internal cohesion within the party.

Obo emerged as the party’s standard bearer through a consensus arrangement endorsed by delegates at the end of the exercise.

His emergence was greeted with jubilation among supporters, who expressed optimism over the party’s chances in the 2027 governorship election.

Speaking after the exercise, Dick Duke, the State Chairman of the party, commended delegates and party members for their orderly conduct throughout the primaries.

Duke also appreciated officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for monitoring the exercise, maintaining that the leadership of the party under his watch remained duly recognised by both INEC and the national leadership of the ADC.

Earlier, Boniface Etim Chairman of the Election Committee, said the primaries were conducted in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

Etim, explained that the law empowers political parties to conduct congresses and primaries at ward, chapter and state levels, adding that delegates unanimously adopted Obo through a consensus process in line with the party’s directives.

In his acceptance speech, Obo thanked party members and delegates for the confidence reposed in him and assured them that he would justify the mandate given him.

“I won’t fail you, everybody will smile when I become the next Governor of the state. I don’t talk much; I am a man of action,” he said.

Supporters at the venue responded with loud cheers, describing his emergence as the beginning of a new political direction for the ADC in Akwa Ibom State.
