Abuja on high-security alert over threat by #EndSARS protesters

Armed security personnel in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja are on red alert over threats by #EndSARS protesters to resume protest.

BusinessDay sighted over 10 trucks of armed police and mobile policemen on Tuesday patrolling the popular Wuse market and Berger junction.

Wuse and Berger are flashpoints where the protesters usually assemble before taking off.

At the Federal Secretariat, there were armed policemen and civil defence personnel sighted at strategic positions ready to swing into action.

Clement Madu, a trader in Wuse market, said the patrolling by police were not unconnected with the recent threat by #EndSARS protesters to resume protest

He observed that as early as 7:20 am, the police trucks had been patrolling the market and its environs to make sure there was no breakdown of law and order.

When contacted, Yusuf Mariam, the Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Police Command, could not say bluntly if the huge police presence in Wuse market and Berger junction were to wade off a possible threat by #EndSARS protesters.

Mariam simply said that there was no protest in the FCT, adding that the territory was calm.

She debunked the viral videos and pictures in circulation on social media suggesting that another #ENDSARS protest was staged in the territory on Monday.

“The Command wishes to categorically state that there was no #ENDSARS protest in the FCT. Hence, members of the public are enjoined to disregard the video which is mischievous and intended to cause tension amongst residents,” she stressed.

The public relations officer, however, cautioned that in case of any emergency or distress, residents should call the following numbers:08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653, and 08028940883.

While urging residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and go about their legitimate endeavours peacefully, she reiterated the command’s unflinching commitment to the protection of lives and property within the FCT.
