Waidi Shaibu, Lieutenant General and Chief of Army Staff, has said that 80% of Nigerian soldiers, including men of the Army, Navy and Airforce, is involved in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other organised crimes.
Shaibu, who spoke at the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) held in Port Harcourt on Monday to mark 163 years of proud service since the Army’s formation in 1863, commended Nigerian soldiers for their patriotism, steadfastness and dedication.
“Over the decades, the Nigerian Army has continued to transform alongside the nation, adapting to new roles and greater responsibilities, guided by the virtues of selfless service, unwavering loyalty, honour, courage, and sacrifice. The Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its sacred duty to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty, protect its territorial integrity, and safeguard the lives and aspirations of our people.
“Our personnel have served with distinction both at home and abroad, upholding the highest standards of professionalism and patriotism. The lessons of our history continue to guide us as we confront new realities and work tirelessly to ensure peace and stability across Nigeria.
“Today, the Nigerian Army faces evolving security threats, ranging from insurgency, terrorism, and banditry to emerging transnational crimes. Despite these challenges, our troops have continued to achieve significant operational successes, degrading terrorist networks, reclaiming communities, and restoring relative peace to troubled regions.
“It is important to note that this year’s celebration occurs at a crucial period when over 80% of Nigerian troops are fully committed to ongoing operations to combat the diverse security challenges bedevilling our nation. It is also worth noting that the Nigerian Army is not oblivious to the dire security situations in neighbouring countries across the Sahel region.
“We have already noticed the footprints of foreign jihadis across our borders. However, I would like to assure everyone that the Nigerian Army is alert and equal to the task. Like our forebears who successfully dealt with the challenges of their generations in the two world wars, the Nigerian civil war, and the ECOMOG missions, the Nigerian Army of today will certainly prevail in confronting the security challenges of our generation,” Shaibu said.
