75.70% of candidates obtain credits in English, Mathematics as NABTEB releases result

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) on Monday said a total of 21,175 candidates representing 75.72 percent scored five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics, in the last examination.

Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe, registrar and chief executive officer of NABTEB made the announcement during the release of results of the November/ December 2020 examinations in Benin.

Isiugo-Abanihe, who said a total of 32,336 candidates sat for the examinations out of the 32, 541 candidates that enrolled nationwide, disclosed that 25.844 candidates representing 92.42 percent scored five credits and above with or without English Language and Mathematics.

The registrar said the performances are statistically similar to the 2019 results, where 32,349 candidates representing 72.91 percent obtained five credits and above in English Language and Mathematics.

Giving a further breakdown, she said 250 candidates representing 0.77 percent of the total candidates that sat for the examinations were found to be involved in examination malpractice.

She, however, noted that the global economy offers Nigeria new opportunities to adopt Technical and Vocational Education and Training(TVET), technology, and science as veritable tools for national growth and development.

She said that the fewer number of state-owned technical colleges, dearth of qualified technical teachers, increasing cost materials, and lack of technical manpower for effective practical activities are some of the challenges confronting the board.

“There is a need to frontally address the recurring challenges in order to usher in the desired development that is due to be achieved through increased access to TVET”, she said.
