…Says he doesn’t believe in consensus

Usman Alkali Baba, former Inspector-General of Police, has pledged to prioritise security and development in Yobe State if elected governor in the 2027 general election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Baba spoke on Monday after submitting his expression of interest and nomination forms in Abuja, stating that his administration would build on the achievements of the current government while addressing key challenges facing the state.

BusinessDay reports that Yobe is one of the states in the North East region ravaged by the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents for over a decade.

Baba said, “I have just submitted my nomination form, and I am in the race because I want to continue and improve on where the present governor, who will leave office in 2027, stops.

“I believe I have the passion, credibility, and the required experience to lead the people of Yobe State.”

He outlined his vision for the state, with emphasis on agriculture, education, healthcare, and job creation, noting that Yobe’s agrarian nature presents opportunities for economic growth.

“We are an agrarian state, and we want to improve the quality of education, agriculture, and healthcare, as well as create employment opportunities for our young people,” he said.

The former police chief stressed that security would remain the cornerstone of his administration.
“Security is the bedrock of everything we do. Without security, people cannot function effectively, whether as residents or as individuals conducting lawful business,” he said.

Reacting to reports of a consensus candidate within the party, Baba dismissed the claim, saying he was not part of any such arrangement.

“If I believed in any consensus, I wouldn’t be here. I have not attended any consensus meeting, nor have I agreed to support anyone. We all chose to be in the APC; nobody forced us. It is about individual choices and aspirations,” he added.
