The Federal Government has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring security in the Gulf of Guinea, a region crucial for maritime safety and economic stability.
Amid rising concerns over piracy and maritime threats, the Nigerian government is intensifying its efforts to bolster maritime security and safeguard vital shipping routes.
Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs disclosed this at the 6th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Gulf of Guinea Commission in Accra, Ghana.
In his address, Yusuf emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to regional security and development, while aligning with the summit’s theme, “Building a Secure and Prosperous Gulf of Guinea Region for Sustainable Development.”
Tuggar reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to the Commission’s goals, stating that the delays in Nigeria’s financial contributions were due to a recent governmental transition but assured that the matter is being resolved promptly.
Tuggar highlighted the need to focus on three key objectives: safety and security, sustainable development, and environmental protection. He called for legally binding agreements to address issues such as piracy, illegal bunkering, and unreported fishing.
He stressed the importance of internalizing the Yaoundé code of conduct into national laws to enhance regional security. The Nigerian delegation urged the Commission to set concrete timelines for exploring the region’s rich natural resources.
Tuggar emphasized the importance of partnerships with international and regional entities to develop the Gulf of Guinea’s blue economy. Addressing environmental concerns, Tuggar called for stringent measures to prevent pollution and the dumping of radioactive materials.
He also supported the establishment of a Combined Maritime Task Force to enhance regional cooperation.
Tuggar proudly reported Nigeria’s success in reducing piracy incidents since 2022, attributing this to the Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offences Act of 2019.
He proposed the establishment of a specialized regional court to try maritime piracy cases, stressing the need for international cooperation in combating these crimes.
He called for continued collaboration among member states to ensure the security and prosperity of the region.
