…As 1000 golfers begin action in PH with an eye on youth development

A major breakthrough has emerged in the Niger Delta that may boost golf as a sport as Norrenberger group which deals in about eight segments of investments has signed a deal to sponsor golf.

Norrenberger has footprints in Asset Management, Investment Banking, Digital Banking, Securities, Insurance, Pensions, Development Finance, Lending, and Trust. The partnership was signed between the Norrenberger group and Python International Golf Club in Port Harcourt at the weekend. The signing also heralded the kickoff of gold classic in the Garden City.

Thus, about one thousand golfers are expected in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, for a classic two-day golf tournament aimed among others to promote grassroots participation and strengthen community ties.

The tournament titled 2026 Norrenberger International Golf Classic has the ‘Norrenberger Group’, as its headline sponsor in partnership with Python International Golf Club, Port Harcourt.

According to the organizers, the tournament is expected to attract business leaders, professionals, and golf enthusiasts to the Garden City of Port Harcourt, aligns with the company’s commitment to healthy stakeholder engagement beyond traditional business circles and contributing to the local economy.

Speaking at a news briefing in Port Harcourt on Friday, Bako Emmanuel, Python International Golf Club Competition Secretary, said the event would stimulate both micro and macro-economic activities in Rivers State.

Emmanuel lauded the Norrenberger Group for bringing the tournament to Port Harcourt, saying about 144 golfers were expected to play on Saturday which is the first day of the tournament.

Emmanuel stated: “There are about 600 golfers on the ground already. We’re going to have about 140-144 golfers playing tomorrow (Saturday). Aside from the golfers, we are going to have people who must carry their golf bags by the end of the day, that’s an important opportunity for their development.”

He further said youths interested in golf would be identified during the event, with promising talents offered training and scholarships as part of human capital development initiatives. Emmanuel disclosed that most consumables for the competition would be sourced locally which translates to stimulating socio-economic activities.

Also speaking, Amani Momodu, Associate Director, Strategy and Sustainability at ‘Norrenberger Group’, said the tournament reflects the group’s dedication to community relations.

While noting that the partnership with the Python International Golf Club, Port Harcourt is the first and the beginning of a journey, Momodu said the competition goes beyond Golf to building community.

He added, “We are going to be building purposeful collaboration. Gold is a game that is associated with strategic thinking, focus and precision. These are the traits or attributes you find in a Norrenberger person and in the way we deliver services and products to our clients.”

For his part, Ekene Okechukwu, the South-South regional head of Norrenberger, said the maiden edition is a platform to foster positive economic impact, adding that the tournament connects health to wealth. “The tournament has lined up 12 trophies for outstanding players drawn from the men, ladies, veterans and guest categories. We have also put out cash prices and a collection of compensatory tokens for promising golfers,” he stated.

Loveday Deemua, representative of Python International Golf Club, highlighted the sport’s broader benefits. He said: “Beyond physical fitness, golf provides a platform for interaction. This Golf Classic will enable players and corporate leaders to bond and share ideas.”

Highlight of the briefing was the signing of the partnership agreement between Norrenberger Group and the Python International Golf Club, Port Harcourt which they say offers among others, job opportunities and business for the hospitality industry.

The partnership is expected to bring the financial and investment community close to sports especially the elite game of Golf. It is also expected to bring Port Harcourt to the national limelight of Golf and financial world.
