The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that road infrastructure across the state continues to support economic growth, facilitate transportation, and improve the daily lives of residents.
The assurance was given by Anthony Gana Abu, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, during an inspection of the newly completed bypass to the Moro Bridge.
The permanent secretary noted the administration of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq recognises the critical role of accessible road infrastructure in promoting commerce, supporting farmers, easing the movement of commuters, and connecting communities.
He said the government would continue to prioritise projects that make travel safer, faster, and more convenient for all road users.
He described the newly completed bypass as a timely intervention designed to minimise the hardship caused by the collapse of the Bailey Bridge while construction of the new Moro Bridge and rehabilitation of the Ilorin Igbeti Federal Highway continue.
Abu thanked transport unions and members of the public for their patience, understanding, and cooperation throughout the construction period.
He assured road users of the state government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the timely completion of the ongoing projects through sustained engagement with the relevant authorities.
While appealing to motorists to use the temporary bypass responsibly, he advised operators of heavy-duty trucks to avoid the route, explaining that the bypass was constructed as a temporary measure and is not designed to accommodate articulated vehicles.
Also speaking during the inspection, Moshood Akanbi, the Director of Civil Engineering in the Ministry, emphasised the need for continued collaboration between the Ministry and transport unions to ensure the proper use and maintenance of the bypass.
Representatives of transport unions commended the Kwara State Government for its swift response to the situation and for providing an alternative route within a short period.
Mohammed Atelubo, the State Trustee of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), described the government’s intervention as timely and unprecedented, noting that the bypass had brought significant relief to commuters and transport operators who rely on the route daily.
He also commended Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for his responsive leadership and appealed for sustained efforts toward the speedy completion of the Ilorin – Igbeti Federal Highway.
Similarly, Soliu Omodada, the State Public Relations Officer of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), praised the government for its effective management of the challenges that followed the collapse of the Bailey Bridge.
He assured the Ministry of the association’s support in ensuring that road users comply with the guidelines for using the temporary bypass and expressed optimism that the new Moro Bridge would soon be completed.
