Adesola Ogidiolu, a professor, has called on policy makers to make geography mandatory subject in our early educational levels of training particularly primary, junior senior schools in the country.

Ogidiolu gave the advice while delivering the 18rh inaugural lectures titled ‘Geographers in the forest, issues, concern and tasks’ at Prince Audu Abubakar University, Ayingba, adding that doing so will enable more Nigerians to have better understanding and knowledge of forests in the country and assist in tackling insecurity.

Ogidiolu pointed out that the various research he carried out on Nigerian forests have shown that Nigerians were ignorant of various advantages that forests offer, the development, which he maintained, made them (Nigerians) not to give attention to the forests, adding that Nigerians do not pay attention to the forests until now that I security is threatening the whole country.

“Therefore, for sustainable and pragmatic management of natural resources especially forest, it is recommended that geographers and hence geography as a discipline be given greater recognition and attention by educational policy makers through making geography a core and mandatory subject in our early educational levels of training particularly primary, junior and senior secondary schools in Nigeria,” he said.
