In an era where criminal activities are becoming increasingly sophisticated, effective policing requires more than bravery and routine patrols. It demands intelligence, technology, scientific investigation, and continuous professional development.
Recognising this reality, the Niger State Police Command is taking deliberate but steps to redefine policing through capacity building, equipping officers with modern investigative skills needed to tackle contemporary security challenges.
This commitment was recently demonstrated through a two-day intensive training programme on forensic and fraud investigation held at the Police Officers’ Mess in Minna.
The workshop brought together officers from Area Commands, Divisions, and specialized investigative units across the state, creating a platform for knowledge exchange and professional growth.
The training, organised by the Niger State Police Command in partnership with HRH Erelu – Pearl Chidinma Ogbulu, focused on strengthening officers’ competence in forensic analysis, crime scene management, financial fraud investigation, and other critical aspects of modern law enforcement.
For years, security agencies across the country have faced increasing pressure to respond effectively to complex crimes such as cyber fraud, money laundering, terrorism financing, and organised criminal activities.
Traditional methods of investigation, while valuable, are often insufficient against technologically driven crimes. This reality has made capacity building an essential component of modern policing.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, the State Commissioner of Police, represented by Aminu M. Garba, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, DCP, underscored the importance of continuous learning in contemporary law enforcement.
He expressed appreciation to Olatunji Rilwan Disu, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), for prioritising personnel development and institutional reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
According to him, the training aligns with broader efforts to build a knowledge-driven, technology-compliant, people-centred, and professionally competent Police Force capable of effectively addressing emerging security threats.
He noted that modern policing goes beyond courage, discipline, and commitment, stressing that officers must continuously update their knowledge and embrace innovative investigative techniques to remain effective in the fight against crime.
The Commissioner further emphasized that forensic skills have become indispensable in tackling crimes such as digital fraud, financial crimes, and organised criminal networks.
He, therefore, encouraged participants to maximise the opportunity by engaging actively with facilitators and applying the acquired knowledge in their daily duties.
For his part, Pearl Chidinma Ogbulu, the convener of the programme, explained that the training represented a strategic investment in the future of policing.
She commended the Inspector-General of Police for supporting initiatives aimed at developing highly skilled investigators capable of uncovering the truth through scientific and forensic methods.
She also applauded the Niger State Police Command for creating an enabling environment for the programme and urged participants to take full advantage of the learning opportunity.
One of the highlights of the workshop was the calibre of resource persons engaged to facilitate the sessions.
Renowned experts including Suleiman Aruwa, a professor, Stacy Ann Nwodo, PhD, and Jimmy Patrick delivered comprehensive lectures on critical areas such as Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing, Crime Scene Management and Evidence Gathering Techniques, Forensic Financial Investigations, Public Sector Fraud Investigation Frameworks, and Cyber and Digital Forensics.
The sessions exposed participants to practical approaches for identifying money laundering schemes, tracking terrorism financing networks, preserving evidence, maintaining chain-of-custody procedures, conducting forensic financial investigations, and leveraging digital tools in criminal investigations.
Beyond theoretical presentations, the training featured interactive sessions and practical insights designed to prepare officers for real-life investigative challenges. Participants actively engaged during the sessions, sharing experiences and seeking solutions to issues encountered in the field.
Many officers described the programme as timely and impactful, noting that it enhanced their understanding of modern investigative procedures and provided valuable tools for improving case handling and crime detection.
The significance of such training extends beyond the individual officers who participated. By improving investigative capacity, the Police Command is laying the foundation for more effective crime prevention, faster resolution of criminal cases, and improved public confidence in law enforcement.
As criminal elements continue to evolve their methods, law enforcement agencies must remain a step ahead. The adoption of intelligence-led policing, forensic science, and technology-driven investigations is increasingly becoming the benchmark for effective security management worldwide.
For the Niger State Police Command, the workshop reflects a broader vision of transforming policing from a largely reactive institution into a proactive, knowledge-based, and technologically equipped organisation capable of responding to modern security realities.
The programme concluded with the presentation of certificates to over 200 participants in recognition of their successful completion of the training.
More importantly, the workshop left behind a renewed commitment to professionalism, innovation, and excellence in policing.
As Niger State continues to confront evolving security challenges, initiatives such as this demonstrate that capacity building remains one of the most powerful tools for changing the security narrative and building a safer society for all.
