From local pitches to World Cup: Anthony Taylor’s journey to final whistle

Anthony Taylor has retired from elite refereeing, ending a distinguished career that saw him rise from officiating local matches to taking charge of some of football’s biggest fixtures.

The 47-year-old English referee announced his retirement after overseeing 839 matches, including 668 in England’s professional game and 163 international fixtures.

His final assignment came at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he officiated the round-of-16 clash between Portugal and Spain.

Reflecting on his decision, Taylor described elite refereeing as both a privilege and a demanding profession.

“Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense, and the scrutiny is constant,” he said.

“The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career. I want to express my deepest gratitude to my two assistants, Gary and Adam, my refereeing colleagues and everyone connected with the game for all their support over the years.”

Taylor’s career included appointments to the FA Cup finals in 2017 and 2020, the 2015 League Cup final, the 2015 Community Shield and the 2018 Championship play-off final.

Internationally, he spent 14 years on FIFA’s list of elite referees, officiating at the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, the 2020 and 2024 European Championships, and two Club World Cups.

He also took charge of the UEFA Super Cup, UEFA Nations League final, Club World Cup final, Europa League final and a Champions League semi-final.

Howard Webb, chief refereeing officer at PGMOL, described Taylor as “a fantastic servant to the game” whose professionalism and commitment earned him repeated appointments to football’s biggest matches.

According to Transfermarkt, Taylor issued 2,953 yellow cards, 64 second yellow-red cards, 88 straight red cards and awarded 260 penalties during his career.

Often at the centre of controversial decisions, Taylor nevertheless remained one of the world’s most trusted referees.

His retirement marks the end of a career defined by resilience, consistency and service, taking him from grassroots football to the pinnacle of the game.
