EU lauds Ojukwu Varsity’s commitment to achieve climate change action plan

The European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, has commended Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, Anambra State on the commitment to achieve the fight against climate change in the institution.

Mignot gave the commendation while speaking at the Founder’s Day and 4th Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Memorial Lecture, at the Varsity’s ETF Auditorium on Thursday.

Recall that the University a year ago inaugurated a five-year Climate Action Strategic Plan to promote green economy and advance livable and prosperous Anambra state.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Kate Azuka Omenugha, inaugurated the plan at the maiden Climate Action Summit with the theme: ‘Tremendous Strategy for a Sustainable Future’.

The summit then also featured the Investiture of Climate Action Ambassadors and Students’ Environment Police to achieved it set goals.

Speaking further, Mignot noted that the European Union is actively supporting Nigeria’s climate change plans, with a focus on implementing the nation’s ambitious nationally determined contribution through initiatives such as the Nigeria Climate Change Response Programme.

He added that the Union has also partnered with Nigerian ministries to strengthen climate governance, build emissions tracking systems, and promote a sustainable, low-carbon future for the country.

He highlighted the European Union’s strong commitment to climate action, sustainability, and international collaboration, noting that institutions like COOU play a critical role in driving innovative solutions and shaping future leaders.

Mignot expressed his honour to be part of the intellectual discourse and reaffirmed the EU’s interest in strengthening partnerships with Nigerian institutions in areas of education, research, and sustainable development.

He also applauded the State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo for a warmed welcome to the state and for his unwavering support to the grow and development of the university.

Speaking earlier, the COOU Vice Chancellor, Omenugha thanked Mignot for honouring the invitation amidst tied schedules.

Omenugha said that the university under her watch has put together a five year road map for tree planting and climate action.

“The goal is for us to have a better tomorrow, a liveable and prosperous Ojukwu Varsity and Anambra State as a whole and to catch up with the world,” he said.
She noted that the university will plan one million trees in five years to achieved it target.

The theme for this year Memorial Lecture tagged; ‘Sustainable and Climate Resilience Future, Beyond Rhetorics.’

The event also has in attendance the wife of late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and the minister of Foreign Affairs (State), Bianca Ojukwu.
