CUPP backs Reps’ call for Tinubu to resign over insecurity, economic hardship

The Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has thrown its weight behind the House of Representatives Minority Caucus’ call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to either demonstrate effective leadership in tackling Nigeria’s worsening crises or resign from office.

In a statement on Friday, Peter Ameh, acting national chairman of CUPP, said the coalition fully endorses the position of the opposition lawmakers, who accused the Tinubu administration of failing to address worsening insecurity, economic hardship and growing public discontent.

The Minority Caucus had earlier delivered a scathing assessment of the administration, warning that Nigeria was approaching a dangerous tipping point as violent attacks, poverty and political tensions continue to escalate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The lawmakers accused the government of placing undue emphasis on re-election politics while millions of Nigerians grapple with insecurity and rising living costs. They urged President Tinubu to suspend all 2027 political calculations and focus on governance, or step aside.

Speaking on behalf of the caucus in Abuja, Minority Leader Fred Agbedi said the country was facing an unprecedented national emergency requiring urgent and decisive leadership.

Aligning with the lawmakers, CUPP said the administration must either deliver tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians or accept responsibility for its shortcomings.

“In any sane democracy, elected officials who consistently fail to provide good governance and improve the welfare of citizens should honourably resign,” Ameh said.

“President Bola Tinubu and his administration must urgently confront the challenges of insecurity, economic hardship and declining public welfare. Leadership is not an entitlement; it is a responsibility. Where that responsibility is not being effectively discharged, the honourable course of action is to step aside,” he added.

The opposition coalition reiterated its commitment to promoting accountability, good governance and the welfare of Nigerians, urging the President to take immediate and visible steps to address the country’s worsening challenges.

CUPP vowed to continue scrutinising government actions and speaking out on issues affecting citizens, insisting that national interest must take precedence over political considerations.
