The Anambra State Government has announced plans to develop some of its biggest tourist attractions into world-class destinations to attract more visitors, create jobs and grow the state’s economy.
Amedu Udoji, commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, made this known on Saturday in Awka, the state capital.
He said the tourism plans were part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Solution 2.0 agenda, which aims to build on the progress made during the first phase of the administration and expand tourism across the state.
Udoji said that the governor completed and opened Solution Fun City even though it was not included in the government’s original development plan.
He noted that the facility has become one of the state’s major tourism and recreation centres.
According to him, beautiful natural sites alone are not enough to attract tourists from around the world.
He explained that successful tourist destinations also need good roads, quality hotels, entertainment centres and other modern facilities that give visitors a memorable experience.
The commissioner described Ogbunike Cave and Owere Ezukala Cave and Waterfalls as two of Anambra’s most important tourist attractions.
He said Owere Ezukala is one of the largest cave systems in Southern Africa and has great tourism potential.
He explained that the government plans to upgrade these sites with better infrastructure and new recreational facilities to make them more attractive to local and international visitors.
Udoji also revealed that Ogbunike Cave will be developed into a major tourism hub with luxury resorts, five-star hotels and other leisure facilities that will encourage visitors to stay longer in the state.
He added that Agulu Lake would also receive similar development, expressing confidence that some of the projects would be completed before the end of Soludo’s Solution 2.0 administration.
Speaking on the entertainment industry, the commissioner announced that the state government is partnering with ANAWOOD to train young actors and other entertainment professionals.
He also disclosed plans to introduce a Censorship Law to regulate the industry, promote professionalism and improve tax compliance.
