Cyprian Ekwensi’s popular novel The Passport of Mallam Ilia is being made into an animated movie. Premium Times reports that the 2D feature project is being undertaken by Magic Carpet Studios in Nigeria.

Written in 1948 and published in 1960, The Passport of Mallam Ilia follows a man, Ilia, who is seeking revenge for the death of his wife, Zarah, at the hands of a Mallam Usman. It is set mostly in Kano.

Speaking on the importance of the project, Magic Carpet Studios CEO Ferdinand Adimefe stated that:

The animated movie project aims to connect the younger generation with the older one. The Passport of Mallam Ilia is one of the most widely read young adult novels of the late ’90s. It will provide an exciting twist to an already familiar story while exposing the younger generation to the remarkable work of the late iconic writer. It consolidates on efforts in telling authentic African stories, especially through animation.</blockquote
