Changing seasons makes some people anxious because they want things to stay the same. They love the cycle of sameness because its familiarity makes some people feel more certain about life. But the evolution of the life force does not work like that. Everything in life has stages, phases and therefore seasons. Nothing can stay the same. The circle of sameness is an unrealistic and very fruitless pursuit.
So, why do seasons have to change? To answer this question, please permit me to get a bit scientific. Seasons must change because the earth that we all live in must orbit around the sun. The earth’s axis is tilted at an angle of approximately 23.5 degrees relative to its orbit around the sun. As the earth orbits the sun, different parts of the planet receive direct sunlight at different times of the year. When a particular hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, it receives more direct sunlight and experiences warmer temperatures, resulting in summer. Conversely, when that hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, it receives less direct sunlight and experiences cooler temperatures, leading to winter.
Therefore, it is inevitable for seasons to change. God has ordained it so and it is for our own benefit. Our existence in fact is based on the different seasons in our development from infancy to adulthood. There are so many stages between infancy to adulthood, all of which are vital and important for our life success.
Instead of us to wonder why seasons change, what we need to do is take advantage of its benefits. What we all need to do is be ready when the seasons change and be prepared for its arrival. Life is filled with different seasons, because we are all going through different changes in situations and circumstances and developmental processes. Nothing in life is ever linear, things are constantly evolving and therefore changing.
As a human being experiencing life‘s journey, there is bound to be ups and downs, unknown to the known, certainty to uncertainty, joy to sadness, wins and loses.
So, the question is not why seasons change, because it is inevitable that they must change. What we need to focus on as human beings in this journey called life is how we can be fully prepared to meet the different seasons adequately when they change.
How do you stay warm in winter?
How do you ensure you do not slip on the slippery ice?
How do you avoid being submerged in a snow storm?
How do you drive smoothly in the slippery highways?
How do you keep your heat on and your home cozy when it is so cold outside?
There have been too many “winters” in my life. Too many for me to count. It has been daunting, traumatising, frustrating, overwhelming and perplexing, but I have stayed warm and cozy through the turbulence of the “snow storm’, “slippery roads “ and the “black ice” which you never notice until you fall flat on your back or face with a sprained ankle or worst still, a broken leg. Winters can be harsh and merciless, but we must be ready to brave it until the very end.
I lived in Canada for several years and the winters there can be brutal. Sometimes, it seems like we have winters 9 to 10 months of the year. Even when it is fall or spring, it still feels so cold.
I remember visiting Canada for the first time in 2012 or thereabout. I was in Quebec in December. It was the first time I saw a frozen building. The roof, windows, doors were dripping in snow. Cars were submerged in ice. It was incredible! I had never seen anything like it before. In Nigeria, all we had was rainy and dry season. I found it fascinating at first until I had a terrible ice burn in my fingers because my gloves were not warm enough and a horrible chest cold because my “fancy winter coat” was actually quite useless.
When I look at the winters in my life, there was no coat warm enough and no gloves snug enough to keep the cold away which the pain I had to go through was coursing me.
Have you ever felt that kind of indescribable pain that grief can cause?
A loss of a loved one that is so shocking and sudden?
A life cut short at its prime and the hope of a family lost forever?.
