The organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) have announced Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma and South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha as hosts for the 12th edition of the awards, scheduled for 9 May 2026 at Eko Hotel and Suites.
This will be the first time a new host takes over since the awards began in 2013, as IK Osakioduwa steps away from the role. Over the years, Osakioduwa has been a regular part of the event, from hosting the first edition with Vimbai Mutinhiri to working with 16-year-old David Oke during the 2025 ceremony.
The transition had been hinted at during the last edition and is now confirmed. Reacting to the announcement, Osakioduwa said, “@officialbovi and @nomzamo_m Congratulations, guys. I know you’ll kill it. I’ll be cheering for you.”
Bovi, who has previously appeared on the AMVCA stage as a performer, said the new role means more responsibility. “The AMVCA stage is one of the biggest in Africa, and I don’t take that lightly,” he said.
“I wasn’t expecting it. Considering IK has been the host from the beginning, I was really happy when I got the call. I want to bring the energy, the laughs, and the magic that this night deserves.”
Mbatha’s selection shows the awards’ focus on representing talent across Africa. She is known for her role in the TV series Isibaya and her appearance in Coming 2 America. She currently stars as Queen Nandi in Shaka iLembe and also works as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador.
Speaking on the role, Mbatha said, “African storytelling is at an all-time high, and it’s an honour to be the one holding the mic while we celebrate the best of it.”
The 2026 edition will also introduce two new categories—Best Indigenous Language (North Africa) and Best Indigenous Language (Central Africa), as part of efforts to include more regions.
Veteran actress Joke Silva has been appointed Head Judge for this year’s awards. Commenting on the development, Atinuke Babatunde, Executive Head of Content and Channels at MultiChoice West Africa, said, “African stories from cities like Lagos, Nairobi, Dakar, and Johannesburg reflect the continent’s identity and global connections.”
