Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Tems and the Nigerians on BET awards 2024 nominations

Wizkid, Tems, Fireboy get BET Awards nominations

Nigerian artists are having a moment, and the 2024 BET Awards nominations are a shining testament to that. From established superstars to rising talents, Nigerians are well-represented across various categories.

Leading the pack from Nigeria is Ayra Starr, who’s nominated for Best New Artist, BET Her for her song ‘Commas’ and Best International Act with fellow compatriot Asake also featured in the latter category.

She’s also joined by Burna Boy who is nominated twice for Best male R&B/pop artist and Best male hip-hop artist and Tems who got nominations for Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award with her song ‘Me & U’, and Video director of the year.

Seyi Vibez got a BET awards nod for Viewer’s choice: best new international act while Davido and Lojay got nominated for their feature on Chris Brown’s ‘Sensational’ for Viewer’s choice award.

Ayo Edebiri who has had an incredible year at major awards this year is nominated in the best actress category.

Drake coming out of his lyrical feud with Kendrick Lamar received seven nods, followed closely by Nicki Minaj with six. J. Cole, Sexyy Red, SZA and Victoria Monét each have five nominations. 21 Savage, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Tyla and Usher each have four.

With this year’s theme ‘Standing on Culture’ the 2024 BET Awards, which bills itself Culture’s Biggest Night, will air live from Los Angeles on BET on Sunday, June 30, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

BET also announced the first artists confirmed to perform on the show: GloRilla, Latto, Muni Long, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey and Victoria Monét.

Blue Ivy Carter, the 12-year old daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, is nominated for the YoungStars Award.

Nominations were determined by the BET Voting Academy, which is comprised of entertainment professionals and influencers in the fields of music, media, digital marketing, sports journalism, public relations and creative arts.

Voting for the BET Awards’ 2024 Viewer’s Choice Award begins June 6 and ends June 30.
