Nigerian actor Alexx Ekubo, one of Nollywood’s most charismatic and bankable leading men known for his leading roles in romantic comedies and dramas, has died. He was 40.

Ekubo’s passing was confirmed Tuesday by several high-profile Nollywood colleagues, including Funke Akindele, Deyemi Okanlawon and Bolanle Ninalowo. Akindele shared a poignant tribute on her Instagram Stories, writing simply, “i really tried to reach out. to see you one more time but guess you knew best. may your kind soul rest in peace Alex. ore mi like you fondly called, me, i will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. REST IN PEACE ALEX.”

Ninalowo posted, “Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all,” while fellow actor Deyemi Okanlawon posted videos of him and the late actor in a form of reminiscent of their previous encounters.

As of press time, Ekubo’s family had not yet issued an official statement. Details surrounding the exact circumstances of his death remain limited, though multiple reports indicate he had been battling a prolonged illness, with some sources pointing to complications from cancer. Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke on April 10, 1986, in Nigeria, Ekubo first gained national attention as the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr. Nigeria pageant. His breakout role came in the 2012 hit Weekend Getaway, which established him as a romantic lead with broad commercial appeal.
