INEC declares Obaseki winner of Edo State governorship election

The Incumbent governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has been declared the winner of the State’s governorship election conducted on Saturday, September 19.

He emerged winner of the governorship election which held across the 192 wards in the 18 local government areas of the State.

Obaseki defeated his contenders with a total vote of 307,955 , his closest rival, Ize-iyamu of the All Progressives Congress polled a vote of 223, 619 while the Action Democratic Party candidate who came third position scored 2374.

The re-elected governor won in Igueben, Esan Central , Esan North-East, Ikpoba-Okha, Uhunmwonde, Egor, Owan West, Esan South-East, Ovia North-East, Oredo, Esan West, Ovia South-West including Orhionmwon Local Government Areas, where his main opponent comes from.

While the All Progressives Congress candidate won in Owan East, Etsako West, Akoko-Edo, Etsako Central and Etsako East

Declaring the election result in Benin city on Sunday, the State Returning Officer, Akpofure Rim-rukeh said, “the election was duly contested and the candidate received the following votes: Osagie Ize-iyamu of the All Progressives Congress had 223,619 votes while Godwin Obaseki of the People’s Democratic Party had 307, 955

“I, Akpofure Rim-rukeh, hereby certified that I am the Returning Officer for Edo State governorship election.

The Vice chancellor of Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE) said, “That Godwin Obaseki of PDP having satisfied with the requirement of the law and with 25 percent in two-third of Local Government Areas and having a margin of lead higher than cancelled votes is hereby declared the winner and re-elected”.
