El-Zakzaky

Leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, (IMN) otherwise called Shiites, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and wife have reportedly boarded an aircraft about now at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, for India to seek medication.

This was confirmed to BusinessDay on Monday by the Chairman of the free Zakzaky committee Abdulrahaman Abubakar, stressing that the duration of the stay of the IMN leader and his wife will only be determined by their doctors in India. They couple will be attended to at Medenta Hospital, New Delhi, India for medical treatment.

Zak Zaky, who was detained by the Department of State Service (DSS) for about four years, was released following a court order of the Kaduna State High granting him and his wife leave to undergo treatment at an Indian hospital of their choice.

Abubakar also confirmed that the IMN leader would be accompanied on the trip by the DSS operatives’ to supervise the trip as ordered by the court. The court had also ordered their return for the continuation of their trial after their discharge from the hospital.

Abubakar said “the Sheikh and his wife are about to board an aircraft for their trip to India.”

Some sources said that they would be travelling on a privately chartered aircraft.

The trip t India is said to be on certain conditions one of which is that the state government had demanded that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must confirm the appointments of the IMN leader and his wife with the Medanta Hospital, India, and undertake all necessary diplomatic arrangements and protocols to ensure compliance with the conditions of the medical leave.

Another condition is said to be that the Federal government must obtain from the Indian government an irrevocable guarantee that it would not entertain any application by the defendants/applicants or any third party seeking asylum under any guise or conferring the status of political prisoners or any other status aside from being medical patients on the defendants/applicants.

The IMN leader according sources is suffering from partial stroke and other complications as a result of his prolonged incarceration allegedly without proper medical attention in the country.
