Edo State governor and candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Saturday’s governorship election in the state, Godwin Obaseki, has won in 13 of the 18 local government areas in the state, according to results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The incumbent governor had in his final reelection campaign rally in Benin City expressed optimism that with the support of Edo people, he would emerge victorious.

Obaseki took an early lead against his closest rival, Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the results from the local government areas began to trickle in.

BusinessDay had earlier reported that Obaseki maintained a clear lead in 11 local government areas out of the 16 LGAs results earlier announced by INEC at its collation centre in Benin City, the state capital.

Of the 16 LGAs, the PDP won 11 LGAs, which include Igueben, Esan Central, Esan North-East, Ikpoba-Okha, Uhunmwonde, Egor, Owan West, Esan South-East, Ovia North-East, Oredo, and Esan West.

The APC, on the other hand, won five – Owan East, Etsako West (where Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor of the state, hails from), Etsako Central, Akoko-Edo, and Etsako East LGAs.

This was before the commission adjourned results collation for two hours.

When collation resumed, results from the two remaining LGAs showed that in Ovia South-West, the PDP polled 12,659 while the APC scored 10,636 votes. Similarly, in Orhionmwon LGA, the PDP polled 13,445 votes against APC’s 10,458 votes.

Edo State has a total of 18 local government areas.

As at the time of filing this report, however, the electoral umpire has yet to make any declaration.
