ECOWAS suspends Mali over coup

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has suspended Mali from all decision-making bodies of ECOWAS and placed economic and financial embargo on the country following the military takeover in the country.

Mali is one of the 15 member-states of ECOWAS. The regional body late Tuesday, August 18, 2020 published a communique on the military takeover in Mali.

A statement from the ECOWAS Commission said key amongst the decisions taken so far by the regional body are the suspension of Mali from all decision-making bodies of ECOWAS as well as placing economic and financial embargo on the country.

ECOWAS has also urged member states to close all land and air borders with Mali and called for immediate implementation of sanctions against all military officers, their partners and collaborators who participated in the military takeover until constitutional order is restored.

The regional body also said it is dispatching a high-level delegation to Mali to ensure the return of constitutional order.
