Water: Lagos rehabilitating 48 mini waterworks to boost supply

Lagos State is undertaking the rehabilitation of 48 mini waterworks aimed at increasing production and boosting water supply across the state.
Muminu Badmus, managing director, Lagos State Water Corporation (LSWC), disclosed this during a press briefing in Lagos on Thursday, saying “the recent media report that the LSWC was not doing enough in the area of water supply does not reflect the efforts being made by the corporation.
“In as much Lagos is not against constructive opinions, it will not agree to a diatribe devoid of the truth. It becomes imperative therefore, to inform you that the Lagos state government is working relentlessly to ensure that every home in the state is connected to public water that conforms to World Health Organisation (WHO) standard.”
According to Badmus, the current administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is committed to this, and continuously giving LSWC the necessary support to deliver on this important responsibility of providing potable water in sufficient quality to Lagosians, as we all know is essential to good health and ultimate survival of all humans.
Community where the rehabilitation will be embark on are Surulere, Onikan, Lekki, Badore, Ajangbadi, Ikeja, Ikate, Ikorodu, Epe, Victoria Island Annex, Bariga, Oworosoki, Ijora-Badia, Apapa, Iponri, Oshodi, Ikoyi, among others.
He noted that there is ongoing rehabilitation exercise at major Waterworks of Iju, Adiyan and Akute Intakes for efficient service delivery in Lagos.
As part of our renewed efforts towards improvement and reform of water supply services in the state, Badmus said “Lagos water Corporation has embarked on the installation of pre-paid meters in Lekki and Ikeja, and addition 15,000 units to be deployed to Surulere, Itire, Yaba / Ebute – Meta, Iwaya, Victoria Island Annex and Lekki.
“We have also deployed Nodal meter into our distribution networks for better efficiency and management of water supply in different parts of Lagos.
 “These meters will be fitted with telemetry devices for real time remote monitoring and management,” he added.
According to Badmus “Adiyan major waterworks is currently supplying 70 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) and as part of expansion programs, the government has embarked on the construction of Adiyan phase II of 70MGD, and when the reticulation is completed, it will serve Three million residents of Lagos state.
He further explained, “The current rehabilitation and expansion projects going on in different part of Lagos involve replacement of pipes and mains expansion to boost water supply. Some of the benefiting communities include; Surulere, Itire, yaba/Ebute-Meta, Iwaya and Victoria Island.
“Currently, the population of Lagos is over 20 million, and is projected to hit 29 million by 2020. As of now, water demand is 540 MGD and supply is 210 MGD, creating the gap of 330 MGD.
“The projected production based on our installed capacity by year 2020, will be 745 MGD, when the demand will be 733 MGD, and this will gave excess of 12 MGD,” he noted.
He said, “As part of this present administration’s renewed efforts to keep pace with the growth of water demand, Mosan – Okunola mini waterworks (2MDG) was currently commissioned, Ishasi waterworks has just been upgraded to produce 4 MGD capacity is currently supplying over 10 communities in Agbowa/Ikorodu area of the state.
