The Sokoto state government has approved the sum of over N6.6 billion for the construction of teaching hospital to serve as a learning, teaching and research facility for the newly established Sokoto State University.
The government has also approved the sum of #3.4 billion for the construction of two premier hospitals to be situated in Tambuwal and Sabon Birni Local Government Areas (LGAS) of the state.
Ali Inname, a state commissioner for health, disclosed, while, briefing journalists after the state executive council meeting, Thursday, stated that each of the new hospitals in the two LGAs will cost #1.7 billion each
Inname, who is a medical doctor stated that the contract for the construction of the project has been awarded in line with the outlined policy of the state government geared at scaling the provision of healthcare services and development f required manpower to manage the state healthcare system.
He explained that the proposed teaching hospital when completed would go a long way in boosting the training of quality manpower for the state, as well as address the shortages of health workers in the health facilities across the state.
Man-while, some stakeholders in the state sector, have commended the Tambuwal administration for renewed commitment to the development of the health sector, as which is seen in the massive investment in the new hospital infrastructures in the state.
One of the stakeholders, Aliyu Rebah, a resident of the state noted that the move to site the new hospitals in the outskirt of the Sokoto metropolis is an indication of the commitment of the state governor even distribution of medical facilities in all areas of the state.
Rabah pointed out that before now there are over 33 Primary Health Care Centres, three secondary health care centers and a tertiary health care center providing situated in Sokoto metropolis alone.
He, however, said that the proposed teaching hospital, and the two new general hospitals to be sited in Tambuwal and Sabon Birni LGAs is a positive development which will go a long in bringing health care near to the people at the grassroots
