Nigeria has been warned to beef up containment measures amid the resurgence of the deadly virus, Ebola, in Guinea.
The warning issued by the Liberian government is asking Nigeria for further activation of measures to curb the virus from escalating into a major public health threat, according to a circular signed by Ngozi Azodoh, director, Health Planning, Research, and Statistics, Federal Ministry of Health.
“While the relevant technical department and agencies are working on the national response and instituting appropriate measures, you are also to be mindful of this outbreak and its implications to the West African sub-region,” the circular said.
The warning comes over two months after World Health Organisation called for countries to be alert for possible infections.
Congo in February saw a resurgence of its tenth outbreak, the second-largest on record that caused more than 2,200 deaths in 2018-2020.
Also early in April, a total of 15 people in Guinea tested positive for Ebola, with nine of them dying during another outbreak.
It marked the first resurgence of the virus in Guinea since its deadliest epidemic, which killed more than 11,000 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone between 2013 and 2016.
An Ebola outbreak is typically declared over once 42 days have passed following a second negative test of blood samples from the last confirmed case.
At the end of February, Guinea began a vaccination campaign to contain the spread of the virus, which causes severe bleeding and organ failure and is spread through contact with body fluids.
