The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has warned consumers of plantain chips to be cautious as some products contain toxic ingredients.
The warning follows a viral online picture from an eyewitness illustrating how a seller added polythene, known better as ‘rubber’, into the vegetable oil used for frying the plantain.
The agency said such processing poses health threats to consumers in a statement posted via its official handle on X platform.
“In light of this alarming discovery, the agency advises all consumers to exercise caution and be vigilant about where they purchase their plantain chips in order not to ignorantly expose themselves to any harmful substances or preventable food poisoning,” the statement read.
The Agency added that it has launched an investigation into the case, focusing on holding culprits to account for such dangerous practice.
The public is urged to assist in calling the attention of LASCOPA to unlawful practices among sellers of consumable items that can put public health at risk.
