COVID-19: Kwara govt attributes influx of interstate travellers to increase in cases

As at Wednesday, Kwara has a total of 62 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Out out of this number, one death was recorded while 15 patients were treated and discharged- leaving 47 active cases.
Meanwhile, the Kwara State government has attributed the increase in COVID-19 cases in the state to the influx of people from Lagos and North Western states to Ilorin, the state capital despite the ban on inter- state travels.
The state governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq disclosed this while speaking with newsmen during an inspection visit to the Sobi Specialist Hospital’s Isolation Centre in Ilorin.
The governor was at the centre to monitor health personnel’s compliance with safety protocols.
Abdulrazaq revealed that 11 of the index cases at the isolation centre are travellers from Lagos and north- west states who were intercepted by security operatives deployed to enforce the ban on inter – state travels.
He expressed delight that community transmission of COVID-19 has not set in Kwara.
He says the government would continue to mount surveillance to prevent travellers from other states from gaining entrance into the state.
The governor,  who commended the security agencies for rising to the occasion, urged  them to do more in order to stop the spread of the disease in the state.
In her remarks, the team leader of the front line doctors treating COVID-19 patients in the state, Lambe Oladeji expressed satisfaction with the personal protection equipment (PPE) provided for them by the state government, as he assured the governor of the commitment of the team to giving COVID-19 patient the best care.
Meanwhile, the state government says it will provide security agencies in the state with logistic support to enforce COVID-19 border lockdown.
Kayode Alabi, deputy governor announced this during his compliance monitoring tours to Kwara-Osun and Kwara-Kogi borders.
Alabi, who is also the Chairman, Kwara Technical Committee on COVID-19 tasked the security agents at the borders to ensure stricter enforcement of the border lockdown.
The deputy governor, who was accompanied by the Commissioner for Health, Raji Razak,  assured that Kwara State Government would strengthen the security agents with logistics and other support to make the job of preventing unauthorized entry into the state easier.
Briefing the deputy governor, security officers manning the borders identified logistics as major hindrances to effective policing of the boarders and called for synergy with security agents in the neighbouring states.
