The Senate has today, ordered Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to immediately suspend the February 1, 2106 increase in electricity tariff which was reviewed upwards by about 40 per cent.

This decision according to the Senate President Bukola Saraki was necessary in the cost of power for Nigerians, must be preceded by improved service delivery by the power companies.

“Furthermore, the power distribution companies must work to ensure that every establishment in Nigeria is provided with capabilities for metered billing. Doing this would end the sharp practice of arbitrary billing, which estimates the power consumption of Nigerians in the generation of their monthly bills.”

Babatude Fashola, minister for power had stated before the Senate Committee on Power on February 3, that an act of the National Assembly empowered the NERC to increase tariff, hence it would not be able to stop the implementation of the new tariff regime.
