The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Mounir Gwarzo, acting director general, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as substantive DG of the commission.
This followed the adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Capital Market which recommended Gwarzo for confirmation.
Gwarzo had on Monday appeared before the Ademola Adeseun-led committee for screening.
Presenting the report of the committee at Wednesday’s session, Adeseun said the nominee was qualified for the position.
Senators who spoke at the session including Senate leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba; Senate chief whip, Bello Gwarzo and Kabiri Gaya (Kano South) described the nominee as a round peg in a round hole.
Speaking after the confirmation, Senate President David Mark urged the nominee to bring his wealth of experience on the commission.
He stated: “May I on behalf of all of us at the Senate congratulate Gwarzo for this unanimous decision. We hope that he will bring his experience to bear on that institution”.
Gwarzo has 10 years experience as a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Stockbrokers.
In February, 2015, he was elected chairman, Africa/Middle East Regional Committee (AMERC) of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) – the highest decision-making organ of the global securities regulatory organisation.
Recall that he took over the leadership of the commission in acting capacity from Arunma Oteh, whose tenure as SEC DG expired on January 7.
