A female medical consultant and endocrinologist at First Consultant Hospital, Lagos, Ameyo Stella Adedavoh, infected by the index, Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer, on Tuesdaydied from the Ebola virus disease.
Dan Nwomeh, special assistant to the minister of health on media, confirmed this to BusinessDay last night.
The doctor, who was the first confirmed to have contracted the virus, was the one who attended to Sawyer, who brought the virus to Nigeria, and reportedly discovered too late that the man had been infected with Ebola virus.
It was learnt that Adedavoh had fallen into coma for nearly a week before finally succumbing to the disease.
Adedavoh, who is survived by her only son, is the first doctor and the fourth Nigerian to die from the virus.
The other fatalities were two nurses and an ECOWAS protocol officer.
Five other persons who were infected have been discharged from isolation ward, while two other persons are currently undergoing treatment.
Colleagues, friends and family members of the late doctor had launched a campaign for the United States (US) to make the ZMapp experimental drug available for her, describing her efforts at saving the life of Sawyer as “heroic”.
However, makers of the drug had announced that they had run out of supplies and it would take months to produce.
