Small businesses in Nigeria’s market clusters are facing severe electricity shortages, affecting operations and profitability. Over 70% of Nigeria’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs) operate in these markets, relying on petrol generators due to limited access to stable electricity. High energy costs and health concerns from generator fumes and noise pollution remain significant challenges for traders.
Kiru Energy has introduced a solar power solution to tackle these challenges. According to Benedict Okpala, CEO of Kiru Energy, “We launched the Solar PawaStation, an affordable and reliable solar energy system designed for market businesses. These systems, ranging from 1kVA to 2.5kVA, provide power for essential equipment, including refrigerators, fans, and lighting.”
The initiative began in Idumota Market, Lagos, one of Nigeria’s largest pharmaceutical hubs. Okpala noted, “Since the second quarter of 2024, Kiru Energy has successfully powered 23 businesses, demonstrating the real potential of clean energy in market environments. Business owners have reported a 60% reduction in energy costs, along with improved product preservation and better working conditions.”
To ease financial barriers, Kiru Energy collaborated with AB Microfinance Bank to offer flexible payment plans. This collaboration has enabled businesses that previously could not afford solar power to transition from generator dependence.
The project has deployed 21kWp of solar installations, generating 42,157 kWh of clean energy annually and preventing 154.5 metric tons of CO2 emissions. This has eliminated generator noise in powered sections and improved air quality for traders and customers.
Pharmaceutical businesses in the market now store temperature-sensitive medicines without disruptions. Traders work in a quieter and cleaner environment. Predictable energy costs allow businesses to plan finances more effectively, supporting long-term growth.
Kiru Energy plans to expand its solar solutions to additional market clusters across Nigeria. The goal is to establish sustainable commerce models powered by clean, reliable, and affordable energy. By reducing reliance on generators, businesses can improve operations and create healthier environments for traders and customers.
The company remains focused on providing practical energy solutions to Nigeria’s business communities. With continued expansion, Kiru Energy aims to reshape how market clusters access and utilise power, driving economic stability and growth.
