The Platform for Amplifying the Voice and Empowerment of Girls (PAVE), led by Oluwatomi Olunuga, is transforming the lives of young girls in Lagos through finance, education and skill development. This effort, part of the PAVE Fellowship Program 2024, not only equips girls with financial knowledge but also challenges deep-seated gender stereotypes.
“At the heart of PAVE’s mission is the belief that every girl deserves the chance to become financially independent and secure her future,” said Olunuga at the three-day event, themed “Girls Rise, Future Thrives.” Supported by Hacey and funded by Empower UK, the program is a beacon of hope in a society where girls often face significant barriers to education and empowerment.

Olunuga, the PAVE project lead, advocating for change, said, “We’re fighting not just for education, but for the health and socioeconomic well-being of our girls. They’re up against tough barriers – but we’re here to break them down.”
PAVE focuses on a holistic approach, fostering skills like leadership, assertiveness, and decision-making. “It’s about building a healthy lifestyle, not just imparting knowledge,” Olunuga added, highlighting alarming statistics on the challenges faced by girls in sub-Saharan Africa.
Also at the event, Chidinma Uzoukwu, another facilitator at PAVE, echoed these sentiments. “We’re instilling in these girls the belief that they can overcome challenges and achieve their dreams. It’s about more than resisting peer pressure; it’s about redefining their future.”
The program’s impact is evident in the voices of its participants. Gbemase Opeyemi, a bright Jss 3 student, shared, “I’ve learned about integrity, truthfulness, and courage. These aren’t just words; they’re tools for life.”

Another beneficiary, Sunday Gift, voiced a powerful message: “Every girl should have this opportunity. I’ve learned about decision-making and boldness, skills that will guide me throughout my life.”
The PAVE project, spanning a year with follow-up classes, ensures a lasting impact. “You see a transformation,” said facilitator Boluwatife Akinpelu. “Girls who were once shy are now eager to share their knowledge with their communities.”
