NUC Accredits 29 new programmes at Federal University, Lokoja

National University Commission (NUC)

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted the Federal University, Lokoja (FUL) full accreditation to run 29 new programmes, the institution has said.

Vice-Chancellor, Angela Freeman Miri, a professor, said the courses cut across studies in Arts, Sciences, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, and Administration.

Miri disclosed this at a pre-convocation press conference held at the institution on Monday, and explained that the NUC also granted approval for the University to commence postgraduate programmes in all existing courses at the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor announced that the grand finale of the combined 3rd and 4th Convocation ceremonies of the University will hold on Saturday, December 14, 2019, at the institution’s permanent site in Felele, Lokoja, Kogi State capital.

She said in addition to the conventional degree and post-graduate courses, the University established a Consultancy Remedial Programme to help students with deficiencies in some of their ordinary level qualifications to remedy them.

The University had also concluded arrangements to run both certificate and diploma programmes under its Consultancy Services to boost middle manpower development in Nigeria, she announced.

On her achievements since she took over the mantle of leadership of the institution, the Vice-Chancellor said that the University through the Tetfund Special Intervention had been able to carry out numerous physical developments such as provision of Ultramodern Laboratory, construction/rehabilitation of classroom/administrative blocks, drainages/construction of a gatehouse at the permanent site, remodelling/expansion of health facilities and a befitting Library complex among others.

“We are mindful of our staff welfare. They have enjoyed their promotions as at when due. They have also been provided with enabling atmosphere that would enhance their productivity. We have maintained a steady academic calendar to ensure that students graduate at the stipulated period of studies. We have maintained a cordial relationship with the host communities to ensure that peace reigns supreme as well as partnering with host communities for the development of the University,” she said.

On the employment of both academic and non-academic staff, the Vice-Chancellor said that the University authorities had always ensured standards, ensuring that due process was strictly followed.  Miri added that she had adopted the right path in all employments carried out under her administration where the Governing Council would first give approval, advertisements for the positions placed to that effect, interviews conducted before the Federal Character Commission would finally issue Certificate of Compliance.
