At just 17, Don Munachimso, a student of Diamond Special College, Owerri, the Imo State capital, is proving that brilliance knows no age or borders.

With determination, discipline, and an exceptional gift for science and mathematics, the young Nigerian rose to the top of the International STEM Olympiad, bringing home two gold medals and inspiring a new generation of innovators.

The maths prodigy had earlier emerged top of his category at the South-East Maths Olympiad organised by Alex Onyia, the chief executive officer at Educare, who also sponsored the journey to Rome.

For emerging winner at the regional competition, Munachimso qualified to represent the country at the International STEM Olympiad held in Rome, Italy.

Besides, Don Munachimso had emerged as Nigeria’s best IGCSE Chemistry student, which earned him the sum of N5 million grand prize at the 2026 South East Maths Olympiad.

He also finished first at the National Mathematics Competition in Abuja, and secured a $100,000 scholarship to study in Canada.

At the recently concluded International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Munachimso won two gold medals, including the world title in Science.

Onyia, speaking about the young genius emerging among the top performers at the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad, said that Munachimso is the best in world science.

“He is currently the best in Chemistry for IGCSE in Nigeria. His head is filled with maths and science. He is such a gentle and well-behaved boy. He is a star. The investment is worth it,” Onyia said.

Munachimso, alongside Chimdiebube Onwubiko and Onyedikachi Egejurum, made the country proud in Rome, winning four gold medals in the competition that had participants from more than 150 countries competing in Mathematics and Science.

The Nigerian contestants with their teachers were sponsored to Rome by Onyia, who is committed to developing learning in the South-East region and Nigeria as a whole.
