LASUBEB calls for collaboration to deepen, deliver basic education in Lagos

Fixing education sector challenges for increased productivity

The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) has called for a industry wide collaboration of all stakeholders to drive and deepen the delivery of universal basic education in Lagos.

Wahab Alawiye-King, the executive chairman, LASUBEB, made the call at a

two day retreat organised by the Human Development Initiatives (HDI) with the support of MacArthur Foundation, tagged ‘Retreat for Government-Side Actors of Basic Education’.

According to Alawiye-King, the state government is ready to work in synergy with organisations and stakeholders to achieve the goal of providing quality universal basic education in the state.

The LASUBEB chair equally disclosed that the current administration in the state has embarked on several development projects in schools across the state in a bid to improve and provide qualitative universal basic education.

He also commended HDI for its unflinching commitment in the effective supervision, monitoring and evaluation of basic education projects in schools across Lagos believing that the cooperation and constructive criticisms of stakeholders in the education sector will help deliver a better education in the state.

Olufunsho Owasonoye, the executive director, HDI, said emotional intelligence, effective communication, good governance among others are critical soft skills needed to improve basic education delivery.

Owasonoye states further that there is need for self awareness as an important principle and tool to excel in all endeavours.

She equally thanked the LASUBEB members for their efforts, support, openness, pro-activeness, and commitment to duties and responsibilities in ensuring the success of the retreat.

Yinka Akanle, a resource person from the department of Sociology, University of Ibadan, said education governance promotes effective delivery of education services.

Akanle who delivered a paper on ‘Governance of Basic Education’ opined that it is the overarching framework that determines the policy of the state to meet its goals and targets.

Participants at the retreat also applauded HDI for the initiative as it had afforded them an opportunity to learn, unlearn and relearn especially on the importance of data gathering mechanism to achieve success in all endeavours and improving basic Universal education in Lagos.
