Buhari sets up visitation panel to review University of Lagos’ crisis

UNILAG offers free courses to boost employability

President Muhammadu Buhari has set up a special visitation panel to look into the crisis of the University of Lagos and submit a report of their recommendation within two weeks.

As contained in a statement signed by Ben Bem Goong, Director of Press for the Ministry of Education, the panel is expected to review the report of the council sub-committee on review of expenditure of the University of Lagos since May 2017 and make appropriate recommendations after affording all those indicted an opportunity to defend themselves.

Other terms of reference include; to examine the steps taken by the council leading to the removal of the Vice-Chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, and ascertain whether due process was followed as stipulated in the universities Amendment Act, 2003, and the principle of fair hearing adhered to.

“To determine whether the process (if any) leading to the appointment of the Acting Chancellor for the University was consistent with the provisions of the enabling act.

To make appropriate recommendations including sanctions for all those found culpable by the special visitation team on the allegations contained in the report as well as other subsequent actions arising therefrom”.

The panel has Tukur Sa’ad as Chairman, Victor Onuoha, as a member, Ikenna Onyido as a member, Ekanem Braide as a member, Adamu Usman as a member, Jimoh Bankole, and Grace Ekanem as secretary.

The government directs the Pro-chancellor/Chairman of Council, B.O Babalakin, and the Vice-chancellor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe to themselves from official duties during the period of the visitation.

The Government in the statement directs the senate of the University of Lagos to immediately convene to nominate an Acting Vice-Chancellor from amongst its member for confirmation by the governing council, adding that B.O Babalakin and the Vice-chancellor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe should excuse themselves from official duties during the period of the visitation.

“He or She shall oversee the affairs of the University pending the government’s decision on the report of the special visitation panel”.

“The special visitation panel shall be inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu at the Minister’s conference room on Wednesday, 26th August 2020”.
