The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UniAbuja branch, says it will sanction members who fail to comply with the nationwide strike declared by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union.

The Chairman of the branch, Dr Ben Ugheoke, said this on Thursday in Abuja while briefing journalists on the activities of the branch in regard to the indefinite strike called by the parent body.

He said that the union had monitored activities at the campus and saw that there was full compliance with the strike.

“The NEC of ASUU held its meeting on Aug. 12 and came up with the resolution that all branches proceed on a nationwide total comprehensive indefinite strike to press for all the issues that have been on the table.

“In that meeting, there were also some decisions that were reached; for instance, we were given a window between Monday and Wednesday for all branches to domesticate the strike.

“We, UniAbuja-ASUU, held a congress on Wednesday to comply with the directive of NEC; the declared strike is total, comprehensive and indefinite.

“We have gone on monitoring at the two campuses and everybody is complying; we have our internal disciplinary measure that would be activated against any erring member.’’

He said that no member of the union should engage in any form of teaching; attend any statutory meeting, departmental/faculty board, Senate, congregation or council.

According to Ugheoke, members are not expected to conduct or supervise any examinations whatsoever; engage in the supervision of project or thesis at any level.

He added that nobody should force any member of the union to teach, supervise any project or thesis at any level or attend meetings of any guise.

According to him, the monitoring will be continuous to ensure that no one is going contrary to the resolution of the NEC.

ASUU had on Aug. 14, embarked on an indefinite strike to demand the implementation of the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government on conditions of service, funding, university autonomy and academic freedom.
