Airtel Nigeria, one of the mobile telecommunication services providers in Nigeria has organised training for teachers in several elementary schools it adopted across Nigeria.

This is part of the organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative called ‘Adopt a School’ where it provides infrastructural refurbishment of classrooms, including furniture for schools, school uniforms, books, teaching aids, ICT and broadband connectivity.

Speaking during the training programme in Lagos, Emeka Okpara, director, corporate communications and CSR, Airtel Nigeria said that the training at the Oremeji Primary School 2, Ajegunle, Lagos, which is an Airtel adopted school, is to mark the World Teachers Day.

“We adopted Oremeji and several other schools across Nigeria. Being the closest to us, we thought it wise to come in and celebrate this day with them and the best way to do this is to impact the teachers with the training we will provide today.

“These are the people who lay the foundation for future leaders. Therefore, it is important for us to also train and prepare them for the work they do. For us, it is a commitment to look after the school since it is adopted by us. “We need to guide them and provide whatever support we can to make the school stand out. We are also very appreciative of the impact this has made in terms of the enrolment figure and the performance of the students. After we did this, government came to renovate other schools in this location,” Okpara said

He disclosed that Airtel also adopted schools in Imo state, Cross River, Ogun State, Kwara state and Zaria, where it will also run training programmes for teachers.

Chinyelu Anyiam-Osigwe, founder of the Reading for Development Initiative Independent, a nonprofit educational based organization said she was partnering with Airtel on the programme because children education is key to the future generation and a better Nigeria.

Kasali Kudirat, the headmistress of the school said since Airtel commenced the project, students and teachers have multiplied and more facilities have been provided in the school.
