Coronavirus is not airborne – CDC, WHO

The Africa Centre for Disease Control says Coronavirus is not airborne as there is no evidence yet that the virus can be transmitted through the air.

There have been speculations that the virus could be transmitted through the air.

Africa CDC in a tweet on Friday morning maintained that Coronavirus spreads via droplets and contact transmission.

Maria Van Kerkhove, Emerging disease and zoonoses Unit, World Health Organisation (WHO) said there is no need to adopt airborne precautions yet, but said droplet precaution is recommended.

Kerkhove added that there was no need for people to wear medical masks unless they are sick because it prevents them from  infecting someone else.

Kerkhove explained that the virus is transmitted through droplets, which are little pieces of liquids that come out from people’s noses and mouths if they cough, talk, or sneeze.

She advised healthcare workers to use standard droplet precautions, but said that airborne precautions are recommended when they are doing an aerosol-generating procedure.
