UNICEF, OAWA empower women with first aid, CPR training

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Onitsha Anglican Women’s Association (OAWA) have trained women with first aid and Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills in Anambra state, Nigeria.

According to a statement, the four-day event which took place last week was themed ‘Christian Stewardship’. It gathered women from across the Diocese of Niger, blending spiritual reflection with leadership and community empowerment.

“A standout moment of the four-day event was the participation of UNICEF representatives, who joined forces with OAWA to emphasise the importance of women’s empowerment and community development,” the statement said.

It said their presence highlighted the critical role OAWA plays in nurturing leadership and spiritual growth among women.

“The meeting began on August 8 with a General Meeting at Stephen Church, where attendees discussed Christian stewardship. On August 9, Immanuel Church hosted a day dedicated to women’s empowerment, offering workshops on leadership, entrepreneurship, health, and education,” the statement added.

Ifeoma Modebe, president of OAWA said this year’s August meeting underscored its commitment to Christian stewardship.

“The involvement of UNICEF was instrumental, and we are excited to continue our mission of empowering women and strengthening our community,” she said.

Following her address, Ndali Modebe, an advanced first aider, conducted a CPR and first aid training session, equipping participants with essential life-saving skills.

The event ended on August 11, 2024, with a thanksgiving service at Immanuel Church, where participants expressed gratitude and recommitted to their faith and community service.
