Tetra Pak assures on continued mitigation of environmental impact on food system

Firm targets school children in renewed environmental sustainability drive

Tetra Pak, a food processing and packaging solutions company, has assured that it will continue to mitigate environmental impact on food systems and biodiversity.

Adolfo Orive, the company’s President and CEO, who gave this assurance, explained that the company would archive this by decarbonising its value chain, driving circular solutions while contributing to food system resilience and protecting biodiversity

Orive spoke in response to the company’s recognition and award of European Climate Leader 2023 by the Financial Times (FT) for its progress in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction and other environment actions it had taken in recent past.

“All these actions were core to our purpose,” Orive said, adding, “we are committed to making food safe and available everywhere; we promise to protect what’s good – food, people and the planet.”
He stressed that it was their commitment to climate action that earned them the FT recognition, describing FT as

“one of the world’s leading news organizations respected globally for its authority, integrity and accuracy; it is also a leading research firm and provider of market and consumer data.”

The award came after a long but careful selection process that produced only the leading 500 companies with the greatest reduction in their GHG emissions intensity.

Each of the companies that made it to the final list was assigned an individual score, which is calculated using information on the company’s volume of emissions, level of disclosure on these emissions and its reduction of emissions as a percentage.

“Tetra Pak was ranked among the top 20 percent of the 500 companies listed, achieving a 54.3 percent absolute reduction of the Scope 1 and 2 emissions over a five-year period,” Orive said.

The ranking also recognized Tetra Park’s efforts across the value chain (Scope 3), highlighting its regular inclusion among CDP A-list businesses and its net-zero targets as approved by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) along a 1.5° pathway.

“This acknowledgment is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, suppliers, customers and other stakeholders,” the CEO said.

Oshiokamele Aruna, Tetra Pak West Africa’s managing director, added that businesses, especially in Africa, needed to further take concrete and tangible action to protect the environment and to overhaul business-as-usual for the sake of forests, oceans and the climate.
