PowTech Power International Limited, an energy solutions provider, has launched ES-25 Energy Saver Equipment, an energy saving equipment into the Nigerian market, urging Nigerians to take advantage of the technology as it could save the nation as much as $1.5 billion (N240bn) in utility bills annually.

This is against the backdrop of the latest NOI Polls that reveal that the average Nigerian family spends N10,231 to power their utilities on a monthly basis in the first seven months of 2014 due to inadequate power supplies from Gencos and Discos.

Speaking at the launch of the equipment recently, Goody Duru-Oguzie, managing consultant/CEO of PowTech Power International Limited, said the technology had helped other nations to reduce the amount spent on electricity bills as well as help to safeguard their home and industrial appliances from spikes and transient voltage.

Duru-Oguzie also explained that ES-25, which has been tested and proven in nations like India which has similar challenges like Nigeria, is rugged and reliable, with a pay-back period of 12 months as the equipment would help reduce the operational costs of factories and industries if well deployed.

“The ES-25 for instance, is a high efficiency energy-saving optimiser which has capacity to optimise voltage to a desired level and improve the power factor with a low loss impedance technology resulting in eliminating wasteful energy and converting the same into direct electricity savings,” Duru-Oguzie said.

Speaking on the sidelines at the public launch and demonstration of the ES-25, Reginald Ifionu, chief operating officer, Powtech Power International, explained that it costs about $1 million to $1.5 million to develop a megawatt of power plant capacity in Nigeria.

“With this technology, Nigeria will be saving at least $1.5bn from energy saving,” adding that with the energy saved, more consumers would be able to access to electricity as the surplus 25 percent saved from one consumer can be transferred to another who needs it.

According to Ifionu, energy conservation had become imperative for Nigerians as the country was yet to achieve energy sufficiency in spite of the privatisation of the power sector.

He added that “the ES-25 is a high efficiency voltage controller installed in series after the electricity meter has been installed to optimise energy levels by reducing the wasteful energy and converting same into direct energy savings.

He warned that unless Nigerians embraced the culture of energy conservation as practised by other nations, their electricity bills would continue to rise just as demand for energy would continue to spike in spite of numerous efforts by the Gencos and Discos.
